LAN Viewer lets you monitor the shared folders on a LAN and be advised of new files that are added.

LAN Viewer can check the shared material every so often: daily, weekly, or on specific days of the week, and tells you via a pop-up window or email when new files are added. You can also establish filters to indicate, for example, that you only get notifications of specific file types, or copy the new material directly to a folder in your hard drive.

Via an icon situated in the system tray the user can access the monitored folders directly from the dialogue box.
